Title
Ends of Solitude: techniques and technologies of being alone
Abstract
Solitude has been used to modify subjects, selves, spirits or souls in many ways and in many different cultural and historical contexts. More recently, intense experiences of solitude have been widely reported as producing perceptual disturbances, heightened sensitivity to stimuli, and emotional dysregulation in a variety of carceral, therapeutic, and religious settings. Though wilderness solitude is often associated with ideals of freedom, individualism, healing, and autonomy, its effects are not entirely separable from solitudes of confinement found in flotation chambers and control units. Rather, all experiences of solitude emerge from nested series of sensory, semiotic, symbolic, and spatial boundaries.
